This section will discuss the basic machine components of an injection molding machine and the cycle it goes through to produce a plastic part. The basic control parameters and terminology used in the injection portion of the cycle to process a plastic part will also be emphasized.
The injection molding cycle consists of four phases:
- Clamping is the closing of the mold.
- Injection is the filling of the mold.
- Cooling is the hardening of the plastic within the mold.
- Ejection is the removal of the plastic part from the mold.
