This section provides a basic introduction to steelmaking process, standardized steel shapes, and standard stock finishes. The overview of the steelmaking process focuses on the basic raw materials mined for steel production, the common steps in the steel production processes, and the role of rolling mills in the production of end-use steel shapes. In discussing standardized shapes, the most common steel mill product shapes will be presented along with the primary steel selection criteria to be considered by steel buyers. Two standard stock finishes, hot rolled and cold rolled steels, are shown with a discussion of their appropriate applications.
