The standardized shapes of steel purchased from steel mills must be processed further to assume the mechanical properties and shapes required for mold base and cavity construction. Heat treatment processes improve the mechanical properties of the steel or eliminate residual stress and strains left in the steel from forging or machining operations.
The most common heat treatment processes that we will present include–
- Normalizing
- Annealing
- Stress relieving
- Hardening
- Tempering
Machining processes cut the steel into the final shapes and tolerances required by the end use application. We will look at the most common processing techniques and equipment utilized in mold base and cavity instruction. These processes include turning, milling, grinding, boring, welding, drilling, flamecutting and EDM.
