In this section we have presented the most common steel processing techniques for heat treating and machining steel. The benefits of the heat treatment processes to either relieve stresses locked into steel parts or to improve the steel’s mechanical properties were discussed. The heat treatment processes were examined for normalizing, annealing, stress relieving, hardening and tempering. The most common machining processes found in mold construction were also presented. A description of the machining process and photographs for turning, milling, grinding, welding, drilling, flame cutting, and EDM were provided.
