Drilling is the process of rotating a hardened cutting tool and feeding it into a stationary clamped work -piece. Although the typical drilling process is a relatively fast hole making method, it generally does not produce accurate hole geometry, location or size. Therefore it is used for rough hole machining prior to finishing operations such as boring or reaming of fastener holes for mold base components. Long and accurate mold coolant/steam holes are done by a special process called gun drilling. Shown here is drilling being done on a tool room style drill press.
